Architectural Decisions

PMP-001 uses Architecture Decision Records, or ADRs, to capture important architectural choices.

When to record a decision

Record an ADR when a choice affects:

  • Platform capability selection
  • Service boundaries
  • Data ownership
  • Communication patterns
  • Deployment behavior
  • Security posture
  • Operational model
  • Long-term maintainability

ADR expectations

An ADR should record:

  • The decision
  • The context
  • The considered alternatives
  • The consequences
  • The follow-up work, if any

Architectural exceptions

An exception to PMP-001 must be explicit and time-bounded.

An exception record should include:

  • What is being excepted
  • Why the exception is needed
  • The risk being accepted
  • The scope and affected systems
  • The approval owner
  • The planned exit criteria

Rule

Temporary exceptions should not become permanent by accident. If an exception remains relevant, it should be converted into an ADR or folded back into PMP-001.
